Boasting powerful new A18 chipsets, vastly enhanced camera capabilities, and full compatibility with the upcoming Apple Intelligence beta, the new iPhone 16 has all it needs to make a big splash.

But wading through Apple’s new features and technologies can be a tricky affair. So, in this guide, we’ll be focusing on the most important additions coming to the iPhone 16. Once that’s done, it should be much easier for you to decide if you want to make the leap!

Introducing the new iPhone 16 models

Like the iPhone 15 before it, the iPhone 16 will release as a quartet, consisting of the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max respectively.

Additionally, here's the list of available colours for each model. Have a look!

When is the new iPhone 16 coming out?

The official retail launch date for the iPhone 16 locally is 20th September, 8 a.m., though you’ll be able to pre-order it online from StarHub based on the following timeline.

Of course, Apple rolled out much more than just the iPhone 16 at their “It’s Glowtime” event yesterday. For example, those looking around for a new smartwatch can read up on the Apple Watch Series 10, while our audiophile friends will have the AirPods 4 to look forward to, among other releases.

iPhone 16 Comparison Chart: Key Specs and Dimensions

Although the new models are, by and large, physically similar to their iPhone 15 counterparts, the displays on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are actually slightly larger than their predecessors. This is due to them having thinner bezels, which allows for just a little more screen real estate.

As for battery life, the iPhone 16 models offer varying degrees of improvement over their respective counterparts. Notably, the leap is generally more significant on the Pro models, with the iPhone 16 Pro offering a whopping 7 more hours of video playback than the iPhone 15 Pro.

iPhone 16: Our Top 3 Upgrades

Improved Camera Controls

Alongside Apple Intelligence, which we’ll get into shortly, the iPhone 16’s photography package is its other big claim to fame, because it is absolutely stellar.

For this article, though, we’d like to focus on the all-new (physical) Camera Control button, because it is much more useful than it looks. Located just below the Power button, this helpful addition doesn’t just provide users with fingertip access to their camera – the real magic only begins once you’re in the camera app, because it effectively turns your iPhone 16 into a DSLR camera of sorts.

Not only does the Camera Control button operate as a shutter key for you to capture images, but it’s also a slider. Among other functions, it can be used to adjust various photographic elements including depth of field, exposure, lenses, and more, letting you feel like a photography pro.

Speaking of pros, this pairs particularly well with the new 48MP Fusion Camera on the iPhone 16 Pro models, allowing users to record videos in 4K resolution at 120 frames per second!

As the cherry on top, this button is also capacitive in nature. This means that it only registers actual finger-presses, so there’s no need to worry about accidentally snapping pictures while your phone is in your pocket.

Apple Intelligence

An infographic showing how MLO works.

Arguably one of the bigger additions coming to the iPhone 16 (and by extension, Apple’s ecosystem at large), Apple Intelligence is the tech giant’s bold new step forward into the realm of A.I. support.

Seamlessly integrated into iOS 18 in collaboration with ChatGPT, Apple Intelligence is set to bring a wide and ever-increasing variety of supportive features into the fold when it arrives later this year via a free software update. Just to provide a quick taster, here’s a handful of things that you’ll be able to do with it!

  • Image Playground

With Apple Intelligence, users can create, experiment with, and share a wide variety of visuals, tools, and artistic concepts with others. This can apparently be done either in the dedicated Image Playground app or in communication apps like Messages.

  • Priority Messages

Apple Intelligence can automatically analyse and prioritise the most important emails for users, who will see these in a special zone at the top of their inbox. Additionally, it can even create quick summaries based on the contents of an email, allowing you to identify your most important tasks.

iPhone 16 users will be able to immediately utilise these once the Apple Intelligence beta update rolls out in late 2024. Meanwhile, for other Apple devices – like iPad and Mac, the tech giant has announced that these features will come via iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia respectively. However, Apple Intelligence support will only extend as far as the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, so if you want to give it a shot, we advise making the leap to iPhone 16.

8 GB RAM (and the powerful A18 chipset)

An infographic showing how MLO works.

With 8 GB worth of RAM, iPhone 16 users will effectively be walking around with a computer in their pockets. In the context of smartphones, a 2 GB boost is a massive one, and for the iPhone 16, it’s a necessary jump as well.

After all, be it a smartphone or a computer, performing artificial intelligence functionalities are extremely taxing, which means you’ll need to have a system that can accommodate such loads. Of course, the iPhone 16 is perfectly capable of that, and that’s great because you’ll need something really hefty to handle those snazzy AAA gaming graphics.

Indeed, according to Apple, the RAM boost as well as the powerful A18 Pro series chipsets will allow the iPhone 16 Pro to elevate your day-to-day mobile gaming experiences.

This includes delivering up to 2x faster hardware accelerated ray-tracing than the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 Pro. Needless to say, the processing power of the new chipsets will be equally beneficial for both work and play, so whether you’re working on your phone or playing games on the daily commute, you’ll be good to go with the iPhone 16.

iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 15: Should you Upgrade?

How Multi-RU Puncturing works.

iPhone 16 Pro Max vs. iPhone 15 Pro Max

Given the various incremental improvements showcased above, the iPhone 16 actually offers a tidy upgrade over the iPhone 15, especially if you’re considering the Pro version.

Although both generations of iPhones offer similar form factors, there is actually a massive gap in terms of software, processing power, and camera capabilities. In fact, if you often have to work remotely, even the improvements to battery life are worth taking into consideration.

Accordingly, avid photographers and videographers, or those upgrading from an iPhone 14 or older device will probably get the greatest mileage out of the iPhone 16. But even if you’re considering moving up from an iPhone 15 Pro, the potential opportunities afforded by Apple Intelligence (both now and in the future) provide a perfectly good reason to do so.

Regardless, if we had to choose one model out of the four, the iPhone 16 Pro, with its stellar camera capabilities, impressive battery life and all-around solid performance is probably our top contender.
